
Just recently on a visit to my doctors surgery, I noticed that they had some new wooden mulch on the ground around the plants. In fact all they had done was buy some new stuff and just had it placed on top of the old and rotting mulch that was already there.
Now apart from not looking as good, because you could actually see the difference between the new and old, it is also not going to last as long. The old rotting wooden mulch underneath, will cause the new stuff to go off even quicker and the smell, the smell was bad. They had laid the new mulch and sprayed it with water and a solution to stop fungal growth, but this was not the only thing making it smell as the old mulch was quite pungent anyway. A lot of people will tell you that for your kids and even yourself to have fun in the garden, whilst learning about gardening, you need to get dirty and covered in soil. Well this does not have to be the case at all, in fact you can teach your kids how to garden without even using real plants.
That is stupid, you may say, but let me impart you with something that happened to me and my vegetables. One day while my nephew was at my house I asked if he knew where carrots and potatoes came from, his answer was to say that they came from the freezer or a shop.
