
Accidents will always happen in and around the garden when children are playing, after all we can’t keep an eye on them all of the time, we are only human. One of the things we can do though is make sure that where they play is as safe as it can be.

These days we are getting ever increasing amounts of warmer weather, this means children will want to play outside more and parents will want their children to be able to do this as safely as possible. Whether your kids have things to play on in their gardens or not, accidents will happen and we all know you cannot watch all of them, all of the time.
However we can make sure that the areas they have to play in are as safe as possible. This means checking things like swings, slides and other pieces of equipment on a yearly basis. If it can take your weight, then it is safe for your child, things that have chains on should be kept clean of rust and not have any open parts on the links or hooks. Before you consider installation of rubber mulch on a playground area, a thorough site analysis should have been carried out by a certified civil engineer or landscape architect. You should also get a professional in to install the rubber mulch.
The intended playground surface must be prepared in advance to installation. All rocks, wood chips, sods, roots, vegetation and gravel must be removed from the area. If the existing surface is asphalt, this will need to be removed, as this type of surface under the rubber mulch will impede safety. Also the chemicals in asphalt can fade the rubber mulch considerably.
