Some Safety Rules to Teach Your Kids in the Playground
December 26th, 2007Now teaching your kids rules in the playground is quite a hard subject to tackle because you can be too strict and limit their fun in the playground. On the other hand you don’t want them to come to any harm due to any mischievous antics.
Some general tips before they actually leave the house include ensuring your child wears sun screen so they don’t get sun burnt when it’s hot. Also ensure they aren’t wearing clothes with ties or draw strings that could get caught on any playground equipment. The same would apply for necklaces, as they could get caught and strangle a child.
If nothing else, teach your child of importance of NOT walking up to and talking to strangers. There are some crazy people out there who will offer candy and kind words to draw your child away to do horrible things that I don’t want to even contemplate. Make sure they understand NEVER to listen or walk away from the safety of the playground with a stranger.
Kids are always going run about, fall down, bump into things, get a few bruises, a cut knee; it’s all part of growing up. To restrict things like this could only be counter productive but you can teach them things like holding onto the handrails, going on a swing one person at a time, going down a slide one at time and holding on tightly to the seesaw.
One other thing that would be wise to teach your child is to be respectful of other children. Not to smack anyone else or put anyone else in a potentially hazardous situation. Also common sense things like not walking in front of a swing when someone else is on it.
Lastly, teach your child to say where they are going and that they stay in the playground or wherever they say they are. Nothing worries a parent more then a missing child
The playground surface is also a factor, make sure is it soft so that when they do fall over they don’t hurt themselves, Make sure the surface is something like Rubber Mulch – www.RubberMulch.com
