3 Steps to Create Your Own Desktop Zen Garden
A miniature desktop Zen garden will give you the calm you need on a busy day. All it takes is a day or two’s worth of patience and a little creativity with things that don’t cost a fortune.
1. Find the perfect box
Shoe boxeswould be too deep and too big. Ideal boxes are those that come with picture frames or Christmas presents like hankies or socks. They’re mostly square and the depth is more or less half an inch.
You can choose to wrap or paint your box in a soothing, pastel color. However, you can leave your box the way it is if it’s already decorated in sync with our relaxing Zen theme.
Make sure you remove staple wires so that you don’t accidentally wound yourself. Boxes made of very thin material could cause paper cuts. Picking the right box is an important step.
2. Fill it up with rubber mulch
Usually, do-it-yourself Zen sets sold off the shelf come with a packet of sand or tiny white pebbles that look like Nerds candy. Both materials will make your Zen box look great. However, sand could be blown away if your table is near a window. Sand is also very tedious to clean up when someone accidentally knocks off your Zen box. Meanwhile, tiny white pebbles are great, but it is inevitable to lose them bit by bit. It could be very hard to replace your pebbles with the exact material and could end up being expensive.
Using rubber mulch to cover the base of your box is an ideal solution. Rubber mulch is easy to clean up and they come in different colors. Rubber mulch is also non-toxic, so you don’t have to worry for your pets or children.
3. Accessorize
Crafts and hobby stores carry miniature pieces that are suitable for your Zen box. A tiny rake is a basic Zen box element, aside from other garden pieces like tiny bridges and birds.
