Why Rubber Mulch is superior to other mulches?

playground_safetyRubber mulch has been much maligned by environmentalists for two reasons.  First of all, rubber is not easily biodegradable.  Secondly, it prevents plant growth if used as a thick carpet.  But proponents of the product count these two aspects as the positive qualities of rubber mulch.  Let us examine these qualities in detail here.

  • Rubber mulch is derived after cleaning and granulating used rubber tires. This has prevented the uncontrollable accumulation of used tires and has thus prevented an environmental catastrophe.
  • The material prevents growth of weeds and pest growth.
  • It does not decay like other mulches.  As such, it keeps the area clean, free of foul odor.  Other mulches send out foul smell, aid in pest growth and once they decay, would form an impermeable layer under the surface soil thereby preventing drainage of excess water.
  • It is durable, easy to install and economic to maintain.
  • Natural elements like wind and rain cannot drain away the material easily like other mulches.
  • It is easy to buy and install.  It is cheaper than conventional mulches.
  • It saves plants from crawling pests like slugs.

These qualities make rubber mulch superior to any other mulch.  There are actually no valid reasons why we should not use this in agricultural operations.
